Writer & Columnist
In addition to being a writer for the Collective Magazine helicopter flight training column “Straight & Level,” Ben Fouts is a successful business owner and the principal of Mauna Loa Helicopters, based in Kauai, Hawaii. His company owns and operates 24 helicopters on Kona, Kauai and Oahu in addition to several based on the mainland at a university campus in Troy, Alabama, used for flight training as part of the University’s degree program in aviation. Fouts was the youngest ever appointed Designated Pilot Examiner in Hawaii, being invited at age 24. He also holds certifications as a CFI and CFII in both rotorcraft and fixed wing aircraft.
Fouts believes in giving back to the industry and shares as much knowledge as possible with anyone willing to listen to someone with over 8,000 flight hours. He sees his contribution to writing for Heliweb as another avenue to impart the lessons he has learned from experience to a wider audience and hopefully prevent students from making mistakes that could cost them their lives. Fouts lives in Hawaii with his wife and son, making frequent trips to the mainland to visit family as well as indulge his passion in air racing, which he does annually at the Reno Air Races in Nevada.
